Survivors Guide — Every Character, Every Strategy
Each survivor in Dying Light: The Board Game plays differently. Pick the wrong one for your team and night 1 ends in a wipe. Here's our fan-written breakdown of who does what — and how to keep them alive.
Names and stats are described by archetype since the publisher's final character roster is still being expanded across expansions. Always check the rulebook for the official stat block.
The Runner
Parkour specialist
Highest movement and parkour dice in the game — can cross rooftops where others can't, and outrun most threats.
Light on combat. Caught flat-footed, the Runner folds quickly to a swarm.
New players who want to learn the map without dying in the first night.
Top tips
- Always plan an exit before you commit to scavenging a building.
- Use rooftop routes at night — Volatiles can't always reach you up there.
- Take the noise-reduction trinket first if available; you survive by not being seen.
The Brawler
Melee tank
Best melee combat dice and the highest health pool. Can hold a doorway against a small horde.
Slow. Loud. Pulls more walkers than any other survivor when sprinting.
Players who want to feel powerful in fights and don't mind being a noise magnet.
Top tips
- Play the Brawler as your team's anchor — let faster survivors lead, then mop up.
- Save your loudest weapons for daytime; at night they wake everything.
- Pair with the Runner in 2-player to balance speed and survivability.
The Engineer / Crafter
Support / utility
Best at crafting traps, modding weapons, and building barricades. Force-multiplier for the team.
Mediocre raw stats. Without setup time, the Engineer is the weakest in the box.
Patient players who like long-term planning over reactive combat.
Top tips
- Always set up a barricaded safehouse on night 1 — the Engineer is what makes nights 2 and 3 winnable.
- Mod the team's weapons, not your own — the Brawler benefits more.
- Save crafting components; you'll need them more in the late game.
The Scout / Stealth Survivor
Stealth & recon
Best stealth dice, highest sight range, and a passive that lets the team see threats earlier.
Fragile in combat. If detected, the Scout dies fastest of any survivor.
Players who like the cat-and-mouse fantasy of the video games.
Top tips
- You are the team's scout for a reason — move first, report what you see, never engage solo.
- Crouch / crawl actions are nearly always worth the time penalty.
- At night, abandon objectives if a Volatile spots you — escape and try again at dawn.
Best 2-player and 4-player team comps
2-player: Runner + Brawler
Speed and muscle — covers most situations. Runner scouts and grabs objectives; Brawler holds choke points.
4-player: balanced squad
Runner + Brawler + Engineer + Scout. The Engineer's setup time is more affordable with extra hands, and the Scout keeps the team out of ambushes.
